About VA-1 DMAT

Disaster Medical Assistance Teams (DMATs) are part of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) within the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

DMATs typically deploy as 38-person mobile medical units, or smaller strike teams, to augment local health care personnel and facilities in times of disaster. DMATs are capable of standing up self-supporting temporary emergency medical care centers, providing supplemental medical staff for denuded hospitals following disasters and providing airhead support for the movement of casualties from a disaster area to available health care resources in unaffected areas of the nation.

DMAT Capabilities

In mass casualty incidents, DMAT responsibilities include triaging patients, providing austere medical care, and preparing patients for evacuation. In other situations, DMATs may provide primary health care or augment overloaded healthcare staffs.

Triage/Pre-Hospital Care

Evaluating patients based on the seriousness of their illness or injuries to determine the most effective and efficient plan of care.

Emergency Medical Care

Providing care at least equal to the services of a basic hospital emergency department.

General Medical Care

Providing primary care services where access to usual care is limited or unavailable.

Hospital Decompression

Providing medical care within an existing hospital that has limited staff or is otherwise unable to provide adequate care to the number of people needing medical attention.

Support of Patient Movement

Assessing, stabilizing, and preparing patients for transportation.

Mass Prophylaxis

Providing vaccinations or taking other actions to support disease control efforts.

Join The Team

A Disaster Medical Assistance Team Is a group of professional medical personnel supported by a cadre of logistical and administrative staff designed to provide emergency medical care during a disaster or other event.

Highly adaptable, DMAT members are trained to fill a variety of impactful roles, from performing medical triage and emergency care to supporting infusion centers and vaccine sites to decompressing hospital emergency rooms to supporting patient movement and more.

Being a DMAT member can be a rewarding way to use and grow your skills and expertise while helping others in need. It requires dedication and hard work to prepare for and deliver medical assistance in times of crisis.
