The Virginia Beach Police Department, in partnership with Hampton Roads PRIDE and the Hampton Roads LGBTQ Public Safety Consortium, will be hosting a training event focused on increasing the effectiveness of emergency services when responding to the LGBTQ community. Subject matter experts will be providing current and relevant training topics to first responders, including Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, and Emergency Dispatchers. The training topics will focus on better response to needs specific to the LGBTQ community in a variety of situations, and we will highlight ways government services, specifically emergency first responders, can better serve and build relationships with the LGBTQ community. Finally, we will explore ways to integrate the various resources available for the LGBTQ community and how first responders can work within these resources to enhance their services.
Topics will include:
  • Fair and Impartial Policing
  • Transgender Issues – Unconditional Respect
  • Same-Sex Intimate Partner Violence/Community Resources
  • Gay/Straight Alliances – Youth Outreach
  • Organizational Culture and Benefits of Liaisons
  • Panel Discussion
