CHKDThe Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk obtained conditional Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center designation by the Virginia Department of Health. In anticipation of this approval following a successful site visit in late July, the council’s Trauma Triage and OMD Committees revised and approved revisions to the Tidewater EMS Prehospital and Inter-Hospital Regional Trauma Triage Plan. The change is primarily the addition of CHKD to page 13 of the plan as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. For purposes of the regional plan, pediatric patients are those less than 15 years of age. The services include burn treatment as well. CHKD announced they will initiate the Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center services on October 2, 2017. EMS providers should immediately utilize CHKD as a destination for pediatric patients who meet criteria defined in the regional trauma triage plan (see pages 5-8). Facilities should utilize CHKD for transfers for pediatric patients with a trauma score less than or equal to 6 (see pages 9 and 10).

This new service is a change and there will be some time of adjustment as we modify transport and transfer patterns. In the event of a mis-judged age or in the event where a care-giver and child cannot or should not be separated, both CHKD and Sentara Norfolk General are each capable of managing pediatric and adult trauma patients. However, whenever possible, severely injured and burned patients under age 15 should be transported to CHKD.

The other pediatric trauma center in Virginia is located at VCU Medical Center in Richmond so agencies in far western Tidewater will need to determine which facility is closest/fastest for pediatric patients who meet trauma center criteria. In Maryland Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and in DC the Children’s National Medical Center are both Pediatric Trauma Centers. Agencies on the Northern portion of the Eastern Shore will need to determine which facility is closest/fastest for your severely injured/burned pediatric patients.

Please take this opportunity to review the regional trauma triage plan and direct any questions or issues to your agency’s operational medical director. OMDs with questions should direct those to regional medical director Dr. Martin which will be vetted with additional guidance distributed to EMS agencies as needed.

Our regional Performance Improvement Committee and Trauma Triage PI Subcommittee will monitor reports and data as we incorporate this new level of care within our community and will partner with other council committees to ensure appropriate feedback and education, as needed, in the future.
