The City of Virginia Beach Fire Department and Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Memorial dedicated its new memorial on October 24, 2009. The memorial, at the Fire and EMS Training Center (927 South Birdneck Road in Virginia Beach) was built to honor career and volunteer members of both departments who have died in the line of duty.
Two “weeping walls” of water, two eternal-flame torches, three flag poles and bronzed turnout gear represent both departments. The site also includes a wall of granite engraved with the seven names of the fallen heroes as a permanent reminder of the ultimate sacrifice they have made.
Funding and construction for the memorial was obtained through individual and corporate donations of money, the sale of specially engraved pavers that have been placed around the memorial grounds and hundreds of donated hours of labor.
